FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The following are frequently asked questions regarding participation in yoga class:

What do I wear?

Suitable yoga attire includes loose-fitting, comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement, and bare feet. Shorts that are too loose or too short may not be appropriate.

Do I need to bring equipment?

The studio is equipped with mats, blankets & any other props you might need. You’re welcome to bring your own equipment if you prefer.

Where do I change?

Change rooms are available in the studio for your use, and washrooms are down the hall.

What do I do with my belongings?

To keep the yoga space clear, please leave shoes, clothing and coats in the change rooms. You may keep your purses & wallets at the back of the yoga room near the sink. Please turn cellular phones and pagers off during class.

What do I do when I arrive?

Many use this quiet time before class to enjoy the silence and rest. Please respect those around you and take your place quietly, limiting conversation to a minimum before and during class.

What should I do if I arrive late or need to leave early?

If you enter the class during the beginning relaxation, please join in quietly. If you must leave before the end of the class, please let your teacher know ahead of time and take a few minutes to relax before you go.

Should I eat before coming to class?

Yoga is best practised on a relatively empty stomach. Eating a few hours prior to class is recommended to avoid discomfort.

What if there are some poses that I cannot do?

There is no competition in yoga, either with others or with one’s self. You are encouraged to work in a way that is right for your own body ie. without approaching pain. If you should feel pain, please let your teacher know so that we may suggest a modification for you.

Will we work in partners?

Partner work is involved from time to time under the guidance of your teacher. However, this is entirely up to you. If you are not comfortable working with a partner, for whatever reason, please let your teacher know that you’d rather work on your own.

What is the benefit of registering for a session vs. dropping in intermittently?

Our seasonal enrolment (4 sessions/year) enables us to provide consistent class sizes and guarantee your space and comfort. Over the course of the session, beginners receive a sequential & comprehensive introduction, and experienced students watch their practice evolve as we build on concepts weekly.

What if I miss a class?

Missed classes may be made up during the current session. If classes are not made up within the current session, up to 3 classes may be carried over as extra classes if the following session is paid for in full.

Is there a resource to help me with my own yoga practice at home?

A practice manual entitled ‘The Ground, The Breath and The Spine’ is very useful and available at class. Please ask to see a copy. Another recommended book on the background of this particular approach to Hatha yoga is ‘Awakening The Spine’ by Vanda Scaravelli, and is available at most bookstores.

Other considerations:

Please remove your shoes when entering the studio.
Please turn off cell phones and pagers during class.
Please refrain from wearing strong scents & perfumes to respect those with allergies.
Please refrain from smoking or consuming alcohol before class.
Please pay your teacher on time and preferably before class.
Please let your teacher know of any health issues or injuries before class.
If attending a make-up class, please inform the teacher which class you regularly attend so that you may be signed in.
